August has always been my second favorite month of every year (December is my first, duh), for one main reason, it’s my birth month (yup, I am really into birthdays), my birthday is the 28th August.

In Barbados, the island I was born, August also celebrates Kadooment Day, which is a part of Crop Over season. This brings two/three months of festivities like music, fetes, concerts, foods, fairs, etc, to an end.

Kadooment day is that whole sexy-costumes, half naked, weirdly dress people roaming the streets, alcoholic beverages, fry chicken and chips (fries), Soca/Calypso music playing, wukking up (a Caribbean dance style) street jam thing. I never joined a band but every year I use to watch all the excitement from the sidelines and always had a great time too, until the year 2006, I watched while I was pregnant with my daughter (she came a few weeks later) and I felt different, I realized that phase of my life was over and I no longer felt the excitement of watching people behaving like drunken idiots, actually I was very turned off by it. Not that I am turning up my nose at that part of Bajan culture, and I  don’t want to see it die, but I do think people go over the limit with their disgusting behavior.

As a child and teen; I did most of my traveling in August, up until a year ago, I had only traveled to other Caribbean islands such as, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

In 2006, I received the most special August blessing of all, my daughter Kytara was born on the 24th August, four days before my 24th birthday, cool hunh? And just when I thought my Augusts couldn’t get any better, last August I embarked on a quest for a BIGGER and BETTER life. I am a big dreamer and I have a huge thirst for adventure and happiness that Barbados could not quench. So my family and I left that part of our history behind to see the world. That journey officially began August 2nd, 2007.

Now August, 2008 is finally upon us and I am so ecstatic to see it unfold. Here are some of the things I am looking forward to this month, first of all, definitely the celebrations of our birthdays, my 26th and her 2nd. We are planning on having a small party and ice cream cake (my request).

“Nim’s Island” is coming to DVD, August 5th, and “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” will be coming to theaters August 6th, the t.v movies “The American Mall” (MTV), “The True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet” (Lifetime) and “Cheetah Girls: One World” (Disney) premieres this month, and the 2008 Olympics opens August 8th.

By the way, we are moving into our own apartment in September (right now, we live with my mom-in-law), so this month we also get to do some shopping. LOVE IT. Who knows what else this awesome August has in store. Whatever is to come, I know I’ll have fun and be happy, because I’ll be sharing it with my family.
